Narrative:

On takeoff from runway 24 at teb, I was given the teb runway 4 departure with an altitude restr of 1500 ft til 4.5 DME from teb then a climb to 3000 ft. I missed the first level off and continued to 2200 ft. I returned to 1500 ft then continued the departure as given. I do not believe I had any conflicts with any other aircraft. The problem occurred when I looked at the preset altitude of 3000 ft and believed I was cleared to that altitude. I will from now on review more closely the departure procedure to make sure this doesn't occur again.
