Narrative:
While taxiing to runway 24, and nearing the runway at taxiway J1, neither for first officer or I observed a hold short line. I stopped clear of the runway. When cleared into position on runway we both looked behind the aircraft (and to the left)and observed a hold short line that we had crosse prior to stopping. This line in angled across taxiway J, and appears to be newly painted. Neither one of us realized that we were slightly across the line while holding short. There was no traffic conflict. The tower did not question our position and I made no report of being across the line (didn't realize it until we were in position on runway 24). Neither of us recall seeing any markings or signs indicating a hold position prior to stopping, even though we later observed the line. The first officer was completing the before takeoff checklist during the taxi that would have crossed the line. Additionally, we were discussing what appeared to be a discrepancy on our taxi diagram regarding the toda for runway 24. It was subsequently necessary to query the ground controller about the toda. These events were likely what caused us to miss the angled hold short line.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: WHEN RECEIVING CLRNC ONTO THE RWY AT MHT AN A320 CREW REALIZES THAT THEY HAVE ALREADY CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE WITHOUT REALIZING IT. APCHING THE AREA, THE BEFORE TKOF CHKLIST AND A PROB WITH A CHART DISCREPANCY WERE DISTRACTIONS.
Narrative: WHILE TAXIING TO RWY 24, AND NEARING THE RWY AT TXWY J1, NEITHER FOR FO OR I OBSERVED A HOLD SHORT LINE. I STOPPED CLR OF THE RWY. WHEN CLRED INTO POS ON RWY WE BOTH LOOKED BEHIND THE ACFT (AND TO THE L)AND OBSERVED A HOLD SHORT LINE THAT WE HAD CROSSE PRIOR TO STOPPING. THIS LINE IN ANGLED ACROSS TXWY J, AND APPEARS TO BE NEWLY PAINTED. NEITHER ONE OF US REALIZED THAT WE WERE SLIGHTLY ACROSS THE LINE WHILE HOLDING SHORT. THERE WAS NO TFC CONFLICT. THE TWR DID NOT QUESTION OUR POS AND I MADE NO RPT OF BEING ACROSS THE LINE (DIDN'T REALIZE IT UNTIL WE WERE IN POS ON RWY 24). NEITHER OF US RECALL SEEING ANY MARKINGS OR SIGNS INDICATING A HOLD POS PRIOR TO STOPPING, EVEN THOUGH WE LATER OBSERVED THE LINE. THE FO WAS COMPLETING THE BEFORE TKOF CHKLIST DURING THE TAXI THAT WOULD HAVE CROSSED THE LINE. ADDITIONALLY, WE WERE DISCUSSING WHAT APPEARED TO BE A DISCREPANCY ON OUR TAXI DIAGRAM REGARDING THE TODA FOR RWY 24. IT WAS SUBSEQUENTLY NECESSARY TO QUERY THE GND CTLR ABOUT THE TODA. THESE EVENTS WERE LIKELY WHAT CAUSED US TO MISS THE ANGLED HOLD SHORT LINE.
