Narrative:
After reporting the field in sight on a high downwind, we were cleared the visual (slam dunk) approach to runway 24R at lax. During the base turn the first officer and I both saw what we believed was the runway 24 complex at lax. I am an lax based pilot and have done this approach hundreds of times. The picture of the runway position just didn't seem right to me. I was still pretty high and concentrating on capturing the GS. The runways seemed too far south to be the runway 24 complex. A visual scan to the right of the runways revealed nothing but darkness and scattered patchy low clouds. The first officer called traffic on our left for the runway 25 complex. When I noticed the traffic, it seemed we were both converging on the same runway. As I maneuvered the aircraft to the right to discontinue the approach, I noticed the faint glow of the runway 24 complex. At this point we were slightly left of the runway 24L centerline. I adjusted our flight path and made an uneventful landing on runway 24R.

Title: FLC ACCEPT VISUAL APCH CLRNC TO LAX RWY 24R, PARTIALLY OBSCURED BY WX, OVERSHOOTING FINAL, CONFLICTING WITH OTHER TFC FOR RWY 24L.
Narrative: AFTER RPTING THE FIELD IN SIGHT ON A HIGH DOWNWIND, WE WERE CLRED THE VISUAL (SLAM DUNK) APCH TO RWY 24R AT LAX. DURING THE BASE TURN THE FO AND I BOTH SAW WHAT WE BELIEVED WAS THE RWY 24 COMPLEX AT LAX. I AM AN LAX BASED PLT AND HAVE DONE THIS APCH HUNDREDS OF TIMES. THE PICTURE OF THE RWY POS JUST DIDN'T SEEM RIGHT TO ME. I WAS STILL PRETTY HIGH AND CONCENTRATING ON CAPTURING THE GS. THE RWYS SEEMED TOO FAR S TO BE THE RWY 24 COMPLEX. A VISUAL SCAN TO THE R OF THE RWYS REVEALED NOTHING BUT DARKNESS AND SCATTERED PATCHY LOW CLOUDS. THE FO CALLED TFC ON OUR L FOR THE RWY 25 COMPLEX. WHEN I NOTICED THE TFC, IT SEEMED WE WERE BOTH CONVERGING ON THE SAME RWY. AS I MANEUVERED THE ACFT TO THE R TO DISCONTINUE THE APCH, I NOTICED THE FAINT GLOW OF THE RWY 24 COMPLEX. AT THIS POINT WE WERE SLIGHTLY L OF THE RWY 24L CTRLINE. I ADJUSTED OUR FLT PATH AND MADE AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG ON RWY 24R.
