Narrative:

Dangerous taxi instructions. After landing on runway 17C at dfw, we were instructed to hold short of taxiway M. This forced us to remain on an active highspd taxiway exit at night with landing aircraft coming in behind us. Apparently, this was done to help ground control as we were instructed to contact our ramp control to verify gage availability at this time. Ramp frequency was clobbered and eventually tower told us to move off the highspd. This is totally unsatisfactory. It was a dangerous situation as another aircraft could come off the runway and not expect to have a plane on the highspd. This was not an isolated incident, as I heard other aircraft being given the same instructions. We were then moved to hold short of runway 17R at taxiway a. Then we were told to inform ATC as to the availability of our gate. This is against our flight manual part 1 that says we must both (pilots) stay on tower frequency until clear of the active runway. If these are new FAA policies then I feel that they must be changed as soon as possible due to the loss of the big picture on safety.

Title: AN FK100 PIC RPT ON SOME NONSTANDARD ATC PROCS USED DURING THEIR ARR LNDG ROLLOUT AND TAXI AT DFW, TX.

Narrative: DANGEROUS TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. AFTER LNDG ON RWY 17C AT DFW, WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO HOLD SHORT OF TXWY M. THIS FORCED US TO REMAIN ON AN ACTIVE HIGHSPD TXWY EXIT AT NIGHT WITH LNDG ACFT COMING IN BEHIND US. APPARENTLY, THIS WAS DONE TO HELP GND CTL AS WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO CONTACT OUR RAMP CTL TO VERIFY GAGE AVAILABILITY AT THIS TIME. RAMP FREQ WAS CLOBBERED AND EVENTUALLY TWR TOLD US TO MOVE OFF THE HIGHSPD. THIS IS TOTALLY UNSATISFACTORY. IT WAS A DANGEROUS SIT AS ANOTHER ACFT COULD COME OFF THE RWY AND NOT EXPECT TO HAVE A PLANE ON THE HIGHSPD. THIS WAS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT, AS I HEARD OTHER ACFT BEING GIVEN THE SAME INSTRUCTIONS. WE WERE THEN MOVED TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 17R AT TXWY A. THEN WE WERE TOLD TO INFORM ATC AS TO THE AVAILABILITY OF OUR GATE. THIS IS AGAINST OUR FLT MANUAL PART 1 THAT SAYS WE MUST BOTH (PLTS) STAY ON TWR FREQ UNTIL CLR OF THE ACTIVE RWY. IF THESE ARE NEW FAA POLICIES THEN I FEEL THAT THEY MUST BE CHANGED ASAP DUE TO THE LOSS OF THE BIG PICTURE ON SAFETY.
