Narrative:

While departing stl the first officer and I became involved in a systems related discussion. This distracted myself from answering the handoff from departure to center. Approximately a half hour went by before I queried departure first, then center, as to which frequency I needed to be on. After checking on with center I was asked to call ind center, which I did. I believe the cause of this was that the first officer and myself became involved in another discussion and we became distracted. To prevent this situation from occurring again I believe that we need to be more disciplined in limiting our cockpit discussion.
