Narrative:

Unknown substance discovery of aircraft. While in our descent for ZZZ, the #$1 flight attendant informed us that a white powdery substance was on the floor in the forward lavatory. I instructed her to cover it with a plastic bag, blankets, block the lavatory. I then informed ZZZ operations by radio of the problem. After landing at ZZZ, ground control parked us in a remote area and said that hazmat team was on the way. 2 hours later, they arrived and inspected the substance. It was determined that tic-tac breath mints had been dropped and stepped on. The hazmat crew chief then allowed us to taxi to our gate and deplane normally. The next morning, contract maintenance would not sign off logbook for substance idented, so after conferring with maintenance control, manager on duty, and ZZZ operations, I signed off the logbook with an information to maintenance under the general section of MEL.
