Narrative:
Bna tower directed us to 'hold short at the end' of runway 31. Runway has explicit direction in 10-7 pages regarding special hold short markings further back from the runway, but includes the caveat 'unless cleared further by ground/tower.' our instructions seemed to indicate clearance to deviate and proceed to physical end of runway. We queried, but received no answer due to frequency congestion. Tower made no comment as we held short at physical end of runway (past special markings), but then sent an incoming aircraft to a different runway 'because someone is in the clear zone.' we were then cleared for takeoff without comment by the tower.

Title: AN MD80 CREW TAXIED PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE DURING TAXI FOR TKOF AT BNA.
Narrative: BNA TWR DIRECTED US TO 'HOLD SHORT AT THE END' OF RWY 31. RWY HAS EXPLICIT DIRECTION IN 10-7 PAGES REGARDING SPECIAL HOLD SHORT MARKINGS FURTHER BACK FROM THE RWY, BUT INCLUDES THE CAVEAT 'UNLESS CLRED FURTHER BY GND/TWR.' OUR INSTRUCTIONS SEEMED TO INDICATE CLRNC TO DEVIATE AND PROCEED TO PHYSICAL END OF RWY. WE QUERIED, BUT RECEIVED NO ANSWER DUE TO FREQ CONGESTION. TWR MADE NO COMMENT AS WE HELD SHORT AT PHYSICAL END OF RWY (PAST SPECIAL MARKINGS), BUT THEN SENT AN INCOMING ACFT TO A DIFFERENT RWY 'BECAUSE SOMEONE IS IN THE CLR ZONE.' WE WERE THEN CLRED FOR TKOF WITHOUT COMMENT BY THE TWR.
