Narrative:
While taxiing out of terminal ramp, captain missed the sharp right turn for the taxiway to runway 13. As we continued to taxi and get ready for the flight, we inadvertently crossed the hold short line for runway 13, and stopped immediately, 1/2 way over the line. We contacted tower and requested a back-taxi to the next intersection. At first, tower told us to hold short for landing traffic, then cleared us to taxi down runway to next taxiway. Nothing was said by tower and no IFR separation occurred with the landing traffic (which was on a 4 mi final). This event could have been averted had the crew paid more attention to where they were going than to setting up radios for the flight.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A JS41 CREW TAXI FOR TKOF AT PIA, AND TAXIED PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE.
Narrative: WHILE TAXIING OUT OF TERMINAL RAMP, CAPT MISSED THE SHARP R TURN FOR THE TXWY TO RWY 13. AS WE CONTINUED TO TAXI AND GET READY FOR THE FLT, WE INADVERTENTLY CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 13, AND STOPPED IMMEDIATELY, 1/2 WAY OVER THE LINE. WE CONTACTED TWR AND REQUESTED A BACK-TAXI TO THE NEXT INTXN. AT FIRST, TWR TOLD US TO HOLD SHORT FOR LNDG TFC, THEN CLRED US TO TAXI DOWN RWY TO NEXT TXWY. NOTHING WAS SAID BY TWR AND NO IFR SEPARATION OCCURRED WITH THE LNDG TFC (WHICH WAS ON A 4 MI FINAL). THIS EVENT COULD HAVE BEEN AVERTED HAD THE CREW PAID MORE ATTN TO WHERE THEY WERE GOING THAN TO SETTING UP RADIOS FOR THE FLT.
