Narrative:
When on downwind in closed traffic, a bonanza was told to report 'midfield downwind, follow cessna ahead.' pilot of the bonanza reported our cessna in sight and was advised to follow. Before we had reached the abeam numbers point, the bonanza reported to the tower 'I've overtaken my traffic.' at this point, I looked behind us and couldn't see it. Looking forward again the bonanza pass slightly left and over us. At this time he was instructed to leave the airspace. During this time, ash had between 7-10 planes in the pattern.
