Narrative:
I, the instructor, and my student were ene of hayward airport inbound to land. Upon our initial contact with hayward tower, they advised us to report hayward civic center for right base entry to 28R. Hayward airport has a parallel runway 28L with a left hand traffic pattern. My student reported hayward civic center, and tower advised us to widen our right base entry because there was traffic on left downwind of 28L that was cleared to land on 28R. As we widened our base, I was looking for traffic on the left downwind of 28L as indicated by tower. Tower then advised us we were cleared to land on 28L. As we adjusted our right base as to turn final for 28L, I asked tower where the traffic for 28R was. Before tower replied, I noticed the aircraft in question was below us approximately 250 ft. What concerns me is that I was looking in the wrong area for traffic. Based on what the tower said about the location of the traffic, I was looking for it on a left downwind of 28L. The traffic however was actually much closer to my aircraft (i.e., on left base turning final for 28R). It is possible that the tower gave me an inaccurate position report on the other aircraft, or that I misunderstood where I was supposed to look for the traffic. Tower and the other aircraft said nothing of this situation, and the rest of our flight proceeded without further incident.

Title: SMA ON TRAINING FLT IN TFC PATTERN HAD NMAC WITH ANOTHER SMA APCHING RWY FOR LNDG.
Narrative: I, THE INSTRUCTOR, AND MY STUDENT WERE ENE OF HAYWARD ARPT INBOUND TO LAND. UPON OUR INITIAL CONTACT WITH HAYWARD TWR, THEY ADVISED US TO RPT HAYWARD CIVIC CENTER FOR R BASE ENTRY TO 28R. HAYWARD ARPT HAS A PARALLEL RWY 28L WITH A L HAND TFC PATTERN. MY STUDENT RPTED HAYWARD CIVIC CENTER, AND TWR ADVISED US TO WIDEN OUR R BASE ENTRY BECAUSE THERE WAS TFC ON L DOWNWIND OF 28L THAT WAS CLRED TO LAND ON 28R. AS WE WIDENED OUR BASE, I WAS LOOKING FOR TFC ON THE L DOWNWIND OF 28L AS INDICATED BY TWR. TWR THEN ADVISED US WE WERE CLRED TO LAND ON 28L. AS WE ADJUSTED OUR R BASE AS TO TURN FINAL FOR 28L, I ASKED TWR WHERE THE TFC FOR 28R WAS. BEFORE TWR REPLIED, I NOTICED THE ACFT IN QUESTION WAS BELOW US APPROX 250 FT. WHAT CONCERNS ME IS THAT I WAS LOOKING IN THE WRONG AREA FOR TFC. BASED ON WHAT THE TWR SAID ABOUT THE LOCATION OF THE TFC, I WAS LOOKING FOR IT ON A L DOWNWIND OF 28L. THE TFC HOWEVER WAS ACTUALLY MUCH CLOSER TO MY ACFT (I.E., ON L BASE TURNING FINAL FOR 28R). IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE TWR GAVE ME AN INACCURATE POS RPT ON THE OTHER ACFT, OR THAT I MISUNDERSTOOD WHERE I WAS SUPPOSED TO LOOK FOR THE TFC. TWR AND THE OTHER ACFT SAID NOTHING OF THIS SITUATION, AND THE REST OF OUR FLT PROCEEDED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.
