Narrative:

Fumes in cockpit/cabin. Returned to ZZZ and trucks waiting. Maintenance said that fumes were from a compressor wash. Crew responded well together. Maintenance should have made sure that the compound used to clean the engine was clean. This could be prevented by making sure the compound is cleaned out before sending the aircraft back into revenue service.

Title: A SAAB 340B IN CLBOUT AT 4000 FT DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED DUE TO FUMES IN CABIN AND COCKPIT. CAUSED BY RESIDUE FROM ENG COMPRESSOR WATER WASH PROC.

Narrative: FUMES IN COCKPIT/CABIN. RETURNED TO ZZZ AND TRUCKS WAITING. MAINT SAID THAT FUMES WERE FROM A COMPRESSOR WASH. CREW RESPONDED WELL TOGETHER. MAINT SHOULD HAVE MADE SURE THAT THE COMPOUND USED TO CLEAN THE ENG WAS CLEAN. THIS COULD BE PREVENTED BY MAKING SURE THE COMPOUND IS CLEANED OUT BEFORE SENDING THE ACFT BACK INTO REVENUE SVC.
