Narrative:
I was flight engineer on flight abc sgf-sdf. On descent, first officer went to restroom while captain was flying. Given restr from center to cross cheri (not sure of spelling or location, but 45 mi from VOR) at 11000 ft MSL. I have no plates, but looked over captain's shoulder and thought cheri was at 40 mi instead of 45 mi, so I was not too concerned. However, as first officer came back, realized it was 45 mi out and we wouldn't make the restr. Captain informed center we would not be able to make it and center gave us a vector. No conflict noted. It is not procedure for flight engineer to have to look at stars and flight engineer is not briefed or has full knowledge of fixes. If I did, I could have been of more help.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B727 CREW, DSNDING INTO SDF, MISREAD THE MILEAGE TO A XING FIX WITH A RESULT OF BEING HIGH AT THE FIX.
Narrative: I WAS FE ON FLT ABC SGF-SDF. ON DSCNT, FO WENT TO RESTROOM WHILE CAPT WAS FLYING. GIVEN RESTR FROM CTR TO CROSS CHERI (NOT SURE OF SPELLING OR LOCATION, BUT 45 MI FROM VOR) AT 11000 FT MSL. I HAVE NO PLATES, BUT LOOKED OVER CAPT'S SHOULDER AND THOUGHT CHERI WAS AT 40 MI INSTEAD OF 45 MI, SO I WAS NOT TOO CONCERNED. HOWEVER, AS FO CAME BACK, REALIZED IT WAS 45 MI OUT AND WE WOULDN'T MAKE THE RESTR. CAPT INFORMED CTR WE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE IT AND CTR GAVE US A VECTOR. NO CONFLICT NOTED. IT IS NOT PROC FOR FE TO HAVE TO LOOK AT STARS AND FE IS NOT BRIEFED OR HAS FULL KNOWLEDGE OF FIXES. IF I DID, I COULD HAVE BEEN OF MORE HELP.
