Narrative:
We were flight abcd holding short of runway 12L. We were then given clearance to take off. We finished our takeoff checklist and ensuring final was clear, taxied the aircraft onto runway 12L centerline. At this time I noticed a B737 crossing our runway and I asked tower about it. Tower replied that, yes, they are crossing aircraft and our instructions were to 'position and hold.' we replied, 'roger, position and hold, air carrier X abcd,' while a second aircraft crossed down-field. I told tower 'if you check the tapes you'll find you had given us takeoff clearance,' not position and hold. Then tower cleared us to take off. The takeoff and flight to den was uneventful. The whole event lasted maybe 30 seconds. Both the copilot and I believe tower had initially cleared us to take off, not position and hold.

Title: MD80 CREW OUTBOUND FROM SJC BELIEVED THEY HAD RECEIVED A TKOF CLRNC, BUT HELD WHEN THEY OBSERVED TFC XING THE RWY.
Narrative: WE WERE FLT ABCD HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 12L. WE WERE THEN GIVEN CLRNC TO TAKE OFF. WE FINISHED OUR TKOF CHKLIST AND ENSURING FINAL WAS CLR, TAXIED THE ACFT ONTO RWY 12L CTRLINE. AT THIS TIME I NOTICED A B737 XING OUR RWY AND I ASKED TWR ABOUT IT. TWR REPLIED THAT, YES, THEY ARE XING ACFT AND OUR INSTRUCTIONS WERE TO 'POS AND HOLD.' WE REPLIED, 'ROGER, POS AND HOLD, ACR X ABCD,' WHILE A SECOND ACFT CROSSED DOWN-FIELD. I TOLD TWR 'IF YOU CHK THE TAPES YOU'LL FIND YOU HAD GIVEN US TKOF CLRNC,' NOT POS AND HOLD. THEN TWR CLRED US TO TAKE OFF. THE TKOF AND FLT TO DEN WAS UNEVENTFUL. THE WHOLE EVENT LASTED MAYBE 30 SECONDS. BOTH THE COPLT AND I BELIEVE TWR HAD INITIALLY CLRED US TO TAKE OFF, NOT POS AND HOLD.
