Narrative:
En route from cvg to jfk, we were climbing and with ZID. We had leveled off at FL270. The captain responded to and read back a clearance to climb to FL310. I initiated the climb. As we were climbing through FL283, ZID called us and said 'stop your climb at FL290, you were not cleared above FL270.' we complied and stopped the climb at FL290. We advised ATC that we had received and read back a clearance to FL310 and he said 'I don't know where you got that from.' this may have been potentially dangerous as part 121 freighters are not required to have TCASII yet. We don't know if there was a traffic conflict or not. Contributing factors: at the time the climb clearance was received (FL270 climbing to FL310), the first officer and flight engineer were talking about something else and the first officer did not hear the climb clearance, only the captain's readback.

Title: AN A300 CREW, LEVEL AT FL270, RESPONDED TO WHAT THEY THOUGHT WAS A CLRNC TO FL310. ATC INFORMED THEM THEY WERE NOT CLRED ABOVE FL270.
Narrative: ENRTE FROM CVG TO JFK, WE WERE CLBING AND WITH ZID. WE HAD LEVELED OFF AT FL270. THE CAPT RESPONDED TO AND READ BACK A CLRNC TO CLB TO FL310. I INITIATED THE CLB. AS WE WERE CLBING THROUGH FL283, ZID CALLED US AND SAID 'STOP YOUR CLB AT FL290, YOU WERE NOT CLRED ABOVE FL270.' WE COMPLIED AND STOPPED THE CLB AT FL290. WE ADVISED ATC THAT WE HAD RECEIVED AND READ BACK A CLRNC TO FL310 AND HE SAID 'I DON'T KNOW WHERE YOU GOT THAT FROM.' THIS MAY HAVE BEEN POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS AS PART 121 FREIGHTERS ARE NOT REQUIRED TO HAVE TCASII YET. WE DON'T KNOW IF THERE WAS A TFC CONFLICT OR NOT. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: AT THE TIME THE CLB CLRNC WAS RECEIVED (FL270 CLBING TO FL310), THE FO AND FE WERE TALKING ABOUT SOMETHING ELSE AND THE FO DID NOT HEAR THE CLB CLRNC, ONLY THE CAPT'S READBACK.
