Narrative:

Final approach runway 36R. Approach turned us on a 040 degree heading for visual approach runway 36L. From 6000 ft we were way too high and should have asked for a 360 degrees or gone around there. I went down to 500 ft AGL intending to go around if not in the slot and tower tried to help offering runway 36R. At 500 ft AGL for runway 36R we were still not on GS and fast, but it looked better and I was fixated on runway, did not go around as required. Shortly thereafter received GPWS warning, executed go around landing uneventfully on runway 35C. I thought I would never allow a situation like that to develop, but the end of a long trip and I failed to act promptly and instinctively as trained.
