Narrative:
While level at FL270 (DC9) 10 NM southwest of sgo (241 degree radial) on J14 (XA45Z) nov/sun/01, we received an RA command to climb. We climbed to FL282 and turned 20 degrees right (080 degrees). Conflicting traffic was an air carrier B737 converging from the opposite direction in a slow climb at our peak altitude of FL282. The B737 was 1200 ft below on our TCASII of FL270, our original altitude. To further compound the problem a GA turbojet was 2000 ft above us same direction, same jet route within 2 mi of our position. To stay clear of this traffic a turn was required in our climb. ATC never called us with a traffic alert. Center at the time was busy transmitting to other carriers and blocked our attempt to broadcast our resolution intentions or situation. Luckily VMC prevailed and we maintained visual contact with both aircraft during the resolution and sufficient separation was maintained without violent maneuvering.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A DC9 CREW, WHILE LEVEL AT FL270 AND 10 NM SW OF GSO, RESPONDED TO A TCASII 'CLB RA.'
Narrative: WHILE LEVEL AT FL270 (DC9) 10 NM SW OF SGO (241 DEG RADIAL) ON J14 (XA45Z) NOV/SUN/01, WE RECEIVED AN RA COMMAND TO CLB. WE CLBED TO FL282 AND TURNED 20 DEGS R (080 DEGS). CONFLICTING TFC WAS AN ACR B737 CONVERGING FROM THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION IN A SLOW CLB AT OUR PEAK ALT OF FL282. THE B737 WAS 1200 FT BELOW ON OUR TCASII OF FL270, OUR ORIGINAL ALT. TO FURTHER COMPOUND THE PROB A GA TURBOJET WAS 2000 FT ABOVE US SAME DIRECTION, SAME JET RTE WITHIN 2 MI OF OUR POS. TO STAY CLR OF THIS TFC A TURN WAS REQUIRED IN OUR CLB. ATC NEVER CALLED US WITH A TFC ALERT. CTR AT THE TIME WAS BUSY XMITTING TO OTHER CARRIERS AND BLOCKED OUR ATTEMPT TO BROADCAST OUR RESOLUTION INTENTIONS OR SIT. LUCKILY VMC PREVAILED AND WE MAINTAINED VISUAL CONTACT WITH BOTH ACFT DURING THE RESOLUTION AND SUFFICIENT SEPARATION WAS MAINTAINED WITHOUT VIOLENT MANEUVERING.
