Narrative:
During initial climb segment (less than 100 ft AGL) on departure from rdu, both screens on my side failed (eadi/ehsi) simultaneously. I xferred the flight controls to the acting first officer (check airman), whose EFIS screens were functioning correctly. In order to maintain VMC we decided to level off about 1200 ft AGL. The check airman recommended we declare an emergency and return to rdu. I agreed and assumed the role of the PNF, declared the emergency and asked for left traffic. We maintained visual with the ground and the airport, however, were unable to execute any troubleshooting through our QRH. A normal visual approach and landing were made by the check airman from the right seat. All descent and approach and landing checklists were completed.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: JETSTREAM 41 FLC DECLARED AN EMER AND RETURN LAND AFTER EXPERIENCING THE EFIS PRIMARY ACFT CTL SCREEN FAILURE ON THE CAPT'S SIDE WHO WAS FLYING AND HAD JUST LIFTED OFF ON INITIAL CLB. THE CHK AIRMAN WHO WAS ACTING AS FO TOOK CTL AND RETURNED TO LAND.
Narrative: DURING INITIAL CLB SEGMENT (LESS THAN 100 FT AGL) ON DEP FROM RDU, BOTH SCREENS ON MY SIDE FAILED (EADI/EHSI) SIMULTANEOUSLY. I XFERRED THE FLT CTLS TO THE ACTING FO (CHK AIRMAN), WHOSE EFIS SCREENS WERE FUNCTIONING CORRECTLY. IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN VMC WE DECIDED TO LEVEL OFF ABOUT 1200 FT AGL. THE CHK AIRMAN RECOMMENDED WE DECLARE AN EMER AND RETURN TO RDU. I AGREED AND ASSUMED THE ROLE OF THE PNF, DECLARED THE EMER AND ASKED FOR L TFC. WE MAINTAINED VISUAL WITH THE GND AND THE ARPT, HOWEVER, WERE UNABLE TO EXECUTE ANY TROUBLESHOOTING THROUGH OUR QRH. A NORMAL VISUAL APCH AND LNDG WERE MADE BY THE CHK AIRMAN FROM THE R SEAT. ALL DSCNT AND APCH AND LNDG CHKLISTS WERE COMPLETED.
