Narrative:
I was in a beechcraft duchess. Ground control indicated he could not understand my radio clearly. After changing mikes, the communications seemed to be a little better. After run-up and when I was ready for takeoff, the tower may have had me confused with another duchess because he indicated he received calls from me, but I did not call him. Anyway, through the engine noise and radio noise, the tower cleared me to 'position and hold with an aircraft on a 3 mi final.' I taxied into position on the runway and thought I heard him say 'cleared for takeoff.' I replied and he may have again called back to me, but with all the radio noise, I may not have heard him. It appears I took off without the tower's permission. There was never any traffic conflict or safety was not a factor for other aircraft or myself. Next time, I will insure the radios are working better and more clear communications are established.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A TKOF FROM THE 'IN POS AND HOLD' POS WITHOUT CLRNC FROM TWR. RADIO RECEPTION WAS AN ISSUE.
Narrative: I WAS IN A BEECHCRAFT DUCHESS. GND CTL INDICATED HE COULD NOT UNDERSTAND MY RADIO CLRLY. AFTER CHANGING MIKES, THE COMS SEEMED TO BE A LITTLE BETTER. AFTER RUN-UP AND WHEN I WAS READY FOR TKOF, THE TWR MAY HAVE HAD ME CONFUSED WITH ANOTHER DUCHESS BECAUSE HE INDICATED HE RECEIVED CALLS FROM ME, BUT I DID NOT CALL HIM. ANYWAY, THROUGH THE ENG NOISE AND RADIO NOISE, THE TWR CLRED ME TO 'POS AND HOLD WITH AN ACFT ON A 3 MI FINAL.' I TAXIED INTO POS ON THE RWY AND THOUGHT I HEARD HIM SAY 'CLRED FOR TKOF.' I REPLIED AND HE MAY HAVE AGAIN CALLED BACK TO ME, BUT WITH ALL THE RADIO NOISE, I MAY NOT HAVE HEARD HIM. IT APPEARS I TOOK OFF WITHOUT THE TWR'S PERMISSION. THERE WAS NEVER ANY TFC CONFLICT OR SAFETY WAS NOT A FACTOR FOR OTHER ACFT OR MYSELF. NEXT TIME, I WILL INSURE THE RADIOS ARE WORKING BETTER AND MORE CLR COMS ARE ESTABLISHED.
