Narrative:
I was picking up the aircraft at bkl after minor avionics maintenance work. After listening to the ATIS, I called ground control for permission to taxi and to request clearance. ATIS gave the active runway as runway 27R/left. Ground gave permission to taxi to runway 27L, via taxiway G. I had worked a full day and driven 2 hours to the airport. Somehow, I reversed the runway directions in my mind and taxied to runway 6L, crossing the approach end of runway 6R. With rain and fog, taxiway and runway markers were poorly visible. I was also preoccupied with readying my charts/route for departure, while taxiing. I wondered why the ground controller had not given clearance to cross runway 6R. I realized my mistake after the tower controller gave me information on my position. He allowed me to depart from runway 6R. There was no other ground, arrival, or departure traffic at the airport. I feel my mistake was due to fatigue and decreased situational awareness, as well as night conditions, fog, and rain obscuring taxiway/runway markings. As always, flying requires a well-rested mind and an adequate level of mental alertness.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A PA24 PLT, TAXIING FOR TKOF AT BKL, BECAME DISORIENTED AND TAXIED TO THE WRONG RWY, COMMITTING A RWY INCURSION ALONG THE WAY.
Narrative: I WAS PICKING UP THE ACFT AT BKL AFTER MINOR AVIONICS MAINT WORK. AFTER LISTENING TO THE ATIS, I CALLED GND CTL FOR PERMISSION TO TAXI AND TO REQUEST CLRNC. ATIS GAVE THE ACTIVE RWY AS RWY 27R/L. GND GAVE PERMISSION TO TAXI TO RWY 27L, VIA TXWY G. I HAD WORKED A FULL DAY AND DRIVEN 2 HRS TO THE ARPT. SOMEHOW, I REVERSED THE RWY DIRECTIONS IN MY MIND AND TAXIED TO RWY 6L, XING THE APCH END OF RWY 6R. WITH RAIN AND FOG, TXWY AND RWY MARKERS WERE POORLY VISIBLE. I WAS ALSO PREOCCUPIED WITH READYING MY CHARTS/RTE FOR DEP, WHILE TAXIING. I WONDERED WHY THE GND CTLR HAD NOT GIVEN CLRNC TO CROSS RWY 6R. I REALIZED MY MISTAKE AFTER THE TWR CTLR GAVE ME INFO ON MY POS. HE ALLOWED ME TO DEPART FROM RWY 6R. THERE WAS NO OTHER GND, ARR, OR DEP TFC AT THE ARPT. I FEEL MY MISTAKE WAS DUE TO FATIGUE AND DECREASED SITUATIONAL AWARENESS, AS WELL AS NIGHT CONDITIONS, FOG, AND RAIN OBSCURING TXWY/RWY MARKINGS. AS ALWAYS, FLYING REQUIRES A WELL-RESTED MIND AND AN ADEQUATE LEVEL OF MENTAL ALERTNESS.
