Narrative:
Having never been into sjc prior I thought I had the runway 12 insight. Upon being cleared for the approach and starting to turn in and descend we noticed our instruments did not indicate alive and the headings did not coincide with a runway 12. At about that time ATC advised that we looked to be right of course and thought we may be looking at moffett airforce base. It was raining but VFR. We at that time looked left and saw sjc more clearly and proceeded to landing without further incident.
