Narrative:
We departed mkc VFR. We stayed at 3000 ft MSL till outside the class D airspace. The bottom of class B airspace at kansas city is 4000 ft. Upon leaving class D airspace, we climbed to 3500 ft. I got the kansas city terminal area chart to see where class B ended. The last ring ended before a medium size lake. I told the PF when we cross 'the lake' we could be able to climb to 5500 ft MSL. I then folded the map and turned around to put it up. When I turned back, we were climbing through 4000 ft. The PF saw a small lake and thought it was the one I stated. I am 99% sure we were outside class B airspace. However, there should have been confirmation on exactly when we would climb. It was poor communication on my part.
