Narrative:

Air carrier departed atl at approximately XC40Z. The filed proposal time was XA35. At XC35, the still inactive flight plan was automatically deleted from the ZTL computer. When the aircraft departed atl a few mins later, the atl approach computer was unable to activate any flight information for the center sector. The approach controller called ZTL with a manual handoff, but hey only had limited flight plan information for departing flts. We were able to locate the flight plan information which had been printed almost 3 hours earlier and re-entered it into the center computer. The software is capable of retaining proposed departure information for much longer periods of time, but because this increases the 'load' on the computer, it usually is not done.

Title: ZTL CTLR IS REQUIRED TO INPUT TIMED OUT DROPPED FLT PLANS DUE TO ACFT DELAYS. QUESTIONS COMPUTER CAPACITY.

Narrative: ACR DEPARTED ATL AT APPROX XC40Z. THE FILED PROPOSAL TIME WAS XA35. AT XC35, THE STILL INACTIVE FLT PLAN WAS AUTOMATICALLY DELETED FROM THE ZTL COMPUTER. WHEN THE ACFT DEPARTED ATL A FEW MINS LATER, THE ATL APCH COMPUTER WAS UNABLE TO ACTIVATE ANY FLT INFO FOR THE CTR SECTOR. THE APCH CTLR CALLED ZTL WITH A MANUAL HDOF, BUT HEY ONLY HAD LIMITED FLT PLAN INFO FOR DEPARTING FLTS. WE WERE ABLE TO LOCATE THE FLT PLAN INFO WHICH HAD BEEN PRINTED ALMOST 3 HRS EARLIER AND RE-ENTERED IT INTO THE CTR COMPUTER. THE SOFTWARE IS CAPABLE OF RETAINING PROPOSED DEP INFO FOR MUCH LONGER PERIODS OF TIME, BUT BECAUSE THIS INCREASES THE 'LOAD' ON THE COMPUTER, IT USUALLY IS NOT DONE.
