Narrative:

The ground controller gave the following taxi instructions. 'Taxi to runway 33, contact the tower abeam the old tower.' we followed the 'J' line as far as it went which was not all the way to the end of the runway. After contacting the tower we were told to stop. The controller told us we had crossed the 'hold short' line but had not encroached onto the runway. The first officer nor I had seen the 'hold short' markings. Within 10 seconds of being told to stop, a beechcraft business jet landed on runway 33. After the jet landed, we were cleared for takeoff without further incident. I feel this was not a runway incursion incident since we had not encroached onto the runway. If it had been, I think the tower would not have let the jet land. Also this incident might have been prevented if there had been 'wig-wag' lights at the 'hold short' markings. Another good idea would have been the ground controller giving us a 'heads-up' about the short 'J' line and unusual placement of the pavement markings. Bur has very tight ramp space which probably let to the markings position. Supplemental information from acn 535924: we were advised to hold short of the departure runway (33), which we did. However, we inadvertently crossed a hold short bar while stopping. We 'did not encroach into the runway environment' per ATC. Since bur has no 'J-lines' (taxi lines) to follow, due to tight confines, we were being cautious in avoiding the aircraft parked at the terminal, while remaining clear of the runways. When told to hold short of runway 33 (the departure runway) by tower, I presumed he meant at the departure end. Our path would have taken us around a parked aircraft and into the runway environment, so we stopped. But, we did miss a hold short bar in our turn. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: a kbur tower specialist revealed that due to the terminal's relative location to the runways, a fairly small ramp area exists. Because of that fact, a resulting unique placement of hold lines is utilized to protect taxiing and landing traffic alike. Taxi clearances, depending on aircraft location, will normally instruct the crews to hold short of the first or second hold line. Aircraft not familiar with the bur operation are encouraged to query ground prior to taxi to familiarize themselves with their procedures.

Title: AN A320 CREW, TAXIING FOR TKOF AT BUR. TAXIED PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE.

Narrative: THE GND CTLR GAVE THE FOLLOWING TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. 'TAXI TO RWY 33, CONTACT THE TWR ABEAM THE OLD TWR.' WE FOLLOWED THE 'J' LINE AS FAR AS IT WENT WHICH WAS NOT ALL THE WAY TO THE END OF THE RWY. AFTER CONTACTING THE TWR WE WERE TOLD TO STOP. THE CTLR TOLD US WE HAD CROSSED THE 'HOLD SHORT' LINE BUT HAD NOT ENCROACHED ONTO THE RWY. THE FO NOR I HAD SEEN THE 'HOLD SHORT' MARKINGS. WITHIN 10 SECS OF BEING TOLD TO STOP, A BEECHCRAFT BUSINESS JET LANDED ON RWY 33. AFTER THE JET LANDED, WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. I FEEL THIS WAS NOT A RWY INCURSION INCIDENT SINCE WE HAD NOT ENCROACHED ONTO THE RWY. IF IT HAD BEEN, I THINK THE TWR WOULD NOT HAVE LET THE JET LAND. ALSO THIS INCIDENT MIGHT HAVE BEEN PREVENTED IF THERE HAD BEEN 'WIG-WAG' LIGHTS AT THE 'HOLD SHORT' MARKINGS. ANOTHER GOOD IDEA WOULD HAVE BEEN THE GND CTLR GIVING US A 'HEADS-UP' ABOUT THE SHORT 'J' LINE AND UNUSUAL PLACEMENT OF THE PAVEMENT MARKINGS. BUR HAS VERY TIGHT RAMP SPACE WHICH PROBABLY LET TO THE MARKINGS POSITION. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 535924: WE WERE ADVISED TO HOLD SHORT OF THE DEP RWY (33), WHICH WE DID. HOWEVER, WE INADVERTENTLY CROSSED A HOLD SHORT BAR WHILE STOPPING. WE 'DID NOT ENCROACH INTO THE RWY ENVIRONMENT' PER ATC. SINCE BUR HAS NO 'J-LINES' (TAXI LINES) TO FOLLOW, DUE TO TIGHT CONFINES, WE WERE BEING CAUTIOUS IN AVOIDING THE ACFT PARKED AT THE TERMINAL, WHILE REMAINING CLR OF THE RWYS. WHEN TOLD TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 33 (THE DEP RWY) BY TWR, I PRESUMED HE MEANT AT THE DEP END. OUR PATH WOULD HAVE TAKEN US AROUND A PARKED ACFT AND INTO THE RWY ENVIRONMENT, SO WE STOPPED. BUT, WE DID MISS A HOLD SHORT BAR IN OUR TURN. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: A KBUR TWR SPECIALIST REVEALED THAT DUE TO THE TERMINAL'S RELATIVE LOCATION TO THE RWYS, A FAIRLY SMALL RAMP AREA EXISTS. BECAUSE OF THAT FACT, A RESULTING UNIQUE PLACEMENT OF HOLD LINES IS UTILIZED TO PROTECT TAXIING AND LNDG TFC ALIKE. TAXI CLEARANCES, DEPENDING ON ACFT LOCATION, WILL NORMALLY INSTRUCT THE CREWS TO HOLD SHORT OF THE FIRST OR SECOND HOLD LINE. ACFT NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE BUR OPERATION ARE ENCOURAGED TO QUERY GND PRIOR TO TAXI TO FAMILIARIZE THEMSELVES WITH THEIR PROCS.
