Narrative:
We had an electrical failure. The alternator stopped changing on a flight from rut, vt, to 8n8 (danville, PA). I turned everything off to conserve battery power for an emergency and landing. VFR night. I was concerned about being sure we lined up to find the susquehanna river east of danville and just got too close to avp. The area north of our course was all mountains with no landmarks. I should have done a better job of navigation. We landed fine with lots of battery power to operate the flaps and landing light.
