Narrative:
During a logbook review conducted jan/xa/02 of logbooks for a learjet 25D it became apparent that a cycle correction entry made in dec/94 was made in error. The error was based on a misunderstanding of a logbook entry made by person unknown that cycles from current engines was added to previous engines, was misunderstood as to causing a jump from cycles of 3056 to jump to 6035. This led me to make a correction to the cycles on the aircraft in dec/94, removing approximately 2900 cycles from total air frame cycles. This cycle correction should not have been made. This resulted in the aircraft flying past a 12000 cycle landing gear time change. The aircraft is currently grounded awaiting replacement of the landing gear. The contributing factor to this mistake is the misleading total of cycles, the lack of explanation to the previous correction, and the jump in cycles.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A LEARJET 25 WAS OPERATED IN NON COMPLIANCE WITH THE LNDG GEAR TIME CHANGE EXCEEDING 12000 CYCLES. CYCLE TIMES IN LOGBOOK ENTERED INCORRECTLY.
Narrative: DURING A LOGBOOK REVIEW CONDUCTED JAN/XA/02 OF LOGBOOKS FOR A LEARJET 25D IT BECAME APPARENT THAT A CYCLE CORRECTION ENTRY MADE IN DEC/94 WAS MADE IN ERROR. THE ERROR WAS BASED ON A MISUNDERSTANDING OF A LOGBOOK ENTRY MADE BY PERSON UNKNOWN THAT CYCLES FROM CURRENT ENGS WAS ADDED TO PREVIOUS ENGS, WAS MISUNDERSTOOD AS TO CAUSING A JUMP FROM CYCLES OF 3056 TO JUMP TO 6035. THIS LED ME TO MAKE A CORRECTION TO THE CYCLES ON THE ACFT IN DEC/94, REMOVING APPROX 2900 CYCLES FROM TOTAL AIR FRAME CYCLES. THIS CYCLE CORRECTION SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN MADE. THIS RESULTED IN THE ACFT FLYING PAST A 12000 CYCLE LNDG GEAR TIME CHANGE. THE ACFT IS CURRENTLY GNDED AWAITING REPLACEMENT OF THE LNDG GEAR. THE CONTRIBUTING FACTOR TO THIS MISTAKE IS THE MISLEADING TOTAL OF CYCLES, THE LACK OF EXPLANATION TO THE PREVIOUS CORRECTION, AND THE JUMP IN CYCLES.
