Narrative:

Our flight was to inspect a maintenance system from ZZZ to ZZZ1. It was the first time over the route for both pilot and observer. FSS advised about the tfr near ZZZ2 and provided coordinated off ZZZ3 VOR. Pilot called ZZZ4 by phone prior to flight and made radio contact approximately 20 NM northwest of ZZZ4. Upon nearing the tfr area, the pilot believed he was west of the area and turned west when informed by ATC that this was taking the aircraft close to the tfr area, the pilot made a 180 degree turn and accepted vectors around the area. Problem was caused by confusion over proximity of the maintenance system to the tfr area and pre-occupation of pilot and observer with tracking the system. Pilot complacency due to contacting ATC was a factor.

Title: ATC WARNS PLT OF PROXIMITY TO A TEMPORARY RESTR AREA.

Narrative: OUR FLT WAS TO INSPECT A MAINT SYS FROM ZZZ TO ZZZ1. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME OVER THE RTE FOR BOTH PLT AND OBSERVER. FSS ADVISED ABOUT THE TFR NEAR ZZZ2 AND PROVIDED COORDINATED OFF ZZZ3 VOR. PLT CALLED ZZZ4 BY PHONE PRIOR TO FLT AND MADE RADIO CONTACT APPROX 20 NM NW OF ZZZ4. UPON NEARING THE TFR AREA, THE PLT BELIEVED HE WAS W OF THE AREA AND TURNED W WHEN INFORMED BY ATC THAT THIS WAS TAKING THE ACFT CLOSE TO THE TFR AREA, THE PLT MADE A 180 DEG TURN AND ACCEPTED VECTORS AROUND THE AREA. PROB WAS CAUSED BY CONFUSION OVER PROXIMITY OF THE MAINT SYS TO THE TFR AREA AND PRE-OCCUPATION OF PLT AND OBSERVER WITH TRACKING THE SYSTEM. PLT COMPLACENCY DUE TO CONTACTING ATC WAS A FACTOR.
