Narrative:
I took off from ZZZ, us, and contacted lunken tower shortly after takeoff. Tower cleared me to land on runway 21R, then I asked for a progressive taxi. I was on the ground for about 30 mins for refueling, and I checked the ATIS information before taxiing. I then tried to contact ground before leaving the ramp. I had no response from ground, so I attempted to contact tower. When I could not establish communication, I concluded that tower was closed. At the airport that I have most of my experience with, the tower closes at XA00, so I was not surprised that I was unable to contact lunken tower. I see now that I jumped to a conclusion, but at the time, it seemed like a logical choice. I decided to taxi to runway 21R, do a runup, take off and proceed northbound.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PA28 PLT THOUGHT THE TWR AT LUK WAS CLOSED. HE TOOK OFF WITHOUT CONTACTING THE TWR FOR CLRNC.
Narrative: I TOOK OFF FROM ZZZ, US, AND CONTACTED LUNKEN TWR SHORTLY AFTER TKOF. TWR CLRED ME TO LAND ON RWY 21R, THEN I ASKED FOR A PROGRESSIVE TAXI. I WAS ON THE GND FOR ABOUT 30 MINS FOR REFUELING, AND I CHKED THE ATIS INFO BEFORE TAXIING. I THEN TRIED TO CONTACT GND BEFORE LEAVING THE RAMP. I HAD NO RESPONSE FROM GND, SO I ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT TWR. WHEN I COULD NOT ESTABLISH COM, I CONCLUDED THAT TWR WAS CLOSED. AT THE ARPT THAT I HAVE MOST OF MY EXPERIENCE WITH, THE TWR CLOSES AT XA00, SO I WAS NOT SURPRISED THAT I WAS UNABLE TO CONTACT LUNKEN TWR. I SEE NOW THAT I JUMPED TO A CONCLUSION, BUT AT THE TIME, IT SEEMED LIKE A LOGICAL CHOICE. I DECIDED TO TAXI TO RWY 21R, DO A RUNUP, TAKE OFF AND PROCEED NBOUND.
