Narrative:
Cleared visual approach to maintain visual separation on aircraft at 3 mi in front of my aircraft (runway 26R, atlanta). Assigned speed of 180 KTS. Unable to maintain assigned speed for 2 mi to fix ajaay and separation from aircraft in front of us. Informed tower unable to maintain 180 KTS. Approach controller threw a childish fit and ordered us to head 360 degrees. No altitude was assigned. I had to ask for an assigned altitude. Controller was sarcastic and abusive of his authority/authorized. Executed a second visual approach, with many comments from ATC about our separation on aircraft around us.
