Narrative:
The active runways were 9L&right. The non active runways were 27L&right, 18L&right, and 36L&right. I was cleared to taxi to runway 9R. Until recently, the taxiway ended at the approach end of runway 9R and the hold short lines were in the standard position. But a new addition to the taxiway extended the taxiway to meet the approach end of runway 36L. This also lengthened runway 9R. I hadn't used this new extension before, so I decided to use the extra length of runway 9R. I was thinking that the new hold short lines would be in the standard place for runway 9R, and didn't see the new hold short lines that kept aircraft from entering runway 36L, even though runway 36L was not active. I assumed that since I was cleared to runway 9R I could taxi to the standard position for runway 9R hold short lines. Just as I got to the unusual place for the new runway 9R hold short lines, the ground controller told me I was crossing the hold short lines. I slammed on the brakes and stopped the aircraft with the front half of the aircraft across the hold short lines and the rear half of the aircraft on the correct side of the hold short lines. The ground controller allowed me to do my run-up at that point due to runway 36L being non active, but told me not to continue forward until cleared to take off on runway 9R. I learned not to assume the usual when an extension to a runway and/or taxiway is built, but rather to ask questions beforehand.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A C152 PLT, TAXIING FOR TKOF AT HWO, CROSSED THE HOLD LINE FOR HIS RWY.
Narrative: THE ACTIVE RWYS WERE 9L&R. THE NON ACTIVE RWYS WERE 27L&R, 18L&R, AND 36L&R. I WAS CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 9R. UNTIL RECENTLY, THE TXWY ENDED AT THE APCH END OF RWY 9R AND THE HOLD SHORT LINES WERE IN THE STANDARD POS. BUT A NEW ADDITION TO THE TXWY EXTENDED THE TXWY TO MEET THE APCH END OF RWY 36L. THIS ALSO LENGTHENED RWY 9R. I HADN'T USED THIS NEW EXTENSION BEFORE, SO I DECIDED TO USE THE EXTRA LENGTH OF RWY 9R. I WAS THINKING THAT THE NEW HOLD SHORT LINES WOULD BE IN THE STANDARD PLACE FOR RWY 9R, AND DIDN'T SEE THE NEW HOLD SHORT LINES THAT KEPT ACFT FROM ENTERING RWY 36L, EVEN THOUGH RWY 36L WAS NOT ACTIVE. I ASSUMED THAT SINCE I WAS CLRED TO RWY 9R I COULD TAXI TO THE STANDARD POS FOR RWY 9R HOLD SHORT LINES. JUST AS I GOT TO THE UNUSUAL PLACE FOR THE NEW RWY 9R HOLD SHORT LINES, THE GND CTLR TOLD ME I WAS XING THE HOLD SHORT LINES. I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES AND STOPPED THE ACFT WITH THE FRONT HALF OF THE ACFT ACROSS THE HOLD SHORT LINES AND THE REAR HALF OF THE ACFT ON THE CORRECT SIDE OF THE HOLD SHORT LINES. THE GND CTLR ALLOWED ME TO DO MY RUN-UP AT THAT POINT DUE TO RWY 36L BEING NON ACTIVE, BUT TOLD ME NOT TO CONTINUE FORWARD UNTIL CLRED TO TAKE OFF ON RWY 9R. I LEARNED NOT TO ASSUME THE USUAL WHEN AN EXTENSION TO A RWY AND/OR TXWY IS BUILT, BUT RATHER TO ASK QUESTIONS BEFOREHAND.
