Narrative:
Approach controller at gatwick international airport, london, united kingdom, admonished us for not holding at willo as he'd expected, after which he provided vectors to the ILS runway 8R final. Our clearance was 'cleared to the london gatwick airport via the willo 1D arrival, willo.' we proceeded past willo and onto the initial approach portion of ILS runway 8R. There had been no issued instructions to hold at willo. Our mistake was to not hold at willo as per british procedure. It would help immensely to have a note on the approach plate or in our airport pages making it clear that you are expected to hold at willo upon receipt of clearance as in paragraph above. We scoured our pubs for help and found none.
