Narrative:
During the lda-a approach into lga inside casle intersection, we were told to contact lga tower. On first transmission to lga tower, the controller asked if we had a DH-8 in sight 1 mi ahead. We told him that we did not have the DH-8 in sight, so the controller broke us off the approach to the east. We then came back for another approach for a landing. During vectors for the first approach we were told to maintain 190 KTS. To my knowledge this was the last speed that we were given. We were never told to follow any traffic. Throughout the approach we never had the DH-8 visually. We were only cleared for the lda-a approach. I am not sure whether our speed was not correct for the final or if the DH-8 was turned in front of us.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MD80 CREW LNDG LGA INSTRUCTED TO BREAK OFF THE FINAL BECAUSE OF A DH-8 1 MI AHEAD ON APCH NOT IN SIGHT.
Narrative: DURING THE LDA-A APCH INTO LGA INSIDE CASLE INTXN, WE WERE TOLD TO CONTACT LGA TWR. ON FIRST XMISSION TO LGA TWR, THE CTLR ASKED IF WE HAD A DH-8 IN SIGHT 1 MI AHEAD. WE TOLD HIM THAT WE DID NOT HAVE THE DH-8 IN SIGHT, SO THE CTLR BROKE US OFF THE APCH TO THE E. WE THEN CAME BACK FOR ANOTHER APCH FOR A LNDG. DURING VECTORS FOR THE FIRST APCH WE WERE TOLD TO MAINTAIN 190 KTS. TO MY KNOWLEDGE THIS WAS THE LAST SPD THAT WE WERE GIVEN. WE WERE NEVER TOLD TO FOLLOW ANY TFC. THROUGHOUT THE APCH WE NEVER HAD THE DH-8 VISUALLY. WE WERE ONLY CLRED FOR THE LDA-A APCH. I AM NOT SURE WHETHER OUR SPD WAS NOT CORRECT FOR THE FINAL OR IF THE DH-8 WAS TURNED IN FRONT OF US.
