Narrative:
Inbound to bed from west for ILS runway 11 bed. Clearance: cross lobby at 2000 ft, cleared ILS runway 11. Approaching lobby at 3000 ft, GS pointer came on view showing intercepting GS from below. Crossed lobby and began descent toward transition altitude of 1700 ft MSL and attempted to capture GS showing fly down indication. Approaching 1700 ft MSL, egpws issued terrain warning. Responded to warning by executing immediate climb. During climb maneuver, lost capture on both localizer/GS. Rearmed localizer/GS. Localizer recaptured and GS came into view now indicating fly up. Recaptured GS needle at 3100-3200 ft MSL. At about this point ATC asked for an altitude check and we responded with our altitude and reported erroneous GS indications. We verified agreement between left and right instruments and resumed the approach to an uneventful landing. We observed no conflict with other aircraft during this maneuver and none was reported to us by ATC. Human factors: I intend to place particular emphasis on altitude awareness versus localizer and GS position in my future approach briefings.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: EGPWS ALERT FROM AN EXCESSIVE RATE OF DSCNT IN CHASING A FALSE GS WELL OUTSIDE THE FAF IN A FALCON 900 ON APCH TO BED, MA.
Narrative: INBOUND TO BED FROM W FOR ILS RWY 11 BED. CLRNC: CROSS LOBBY AT 2000 FT, CLRED ILS RWY 11. APCHING LOBBY AT 3000 FT, GS POINTER CAME ON VIEW SHOWING INTERCEPTING GS FROM BELOW. CROSSED LOBBY AND BEGAN DSCNT TOWARD TRANSITION ALT OF 1700 FT MSL AND ATTEMPTED TO CAPTURE GS SHOWING FLY DOWN INDICATION. APCHING 1700 FT MSL, EGPWS ISSUED TERRAIN WARNING. RESPONDED TO WARNING BY EXECUTING IMMEDIATE CLB. DURING CLB MANEUVER, LOST CAPTURE ON BOTH LOC/GS. REARMED LOC/GS. LOC RECAPTURED AND GS CAME INTO VIEW NOW INDICATING FLY UP. RECAPTURED GS NEEDLE AT 3100-3200 FT MSL. AT ABOUT THIS POINT ATC ASKED FOR AN ALT CHK AND WE RESPONDED WITH OUR ALT AND RPTED ERRONEOUS GS INDICATIONS. WE VERIFIED AGREEMENT BTWN L AND R INSTS AND RESUMED THE APCH TO AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG. WE OBSERVED NO CONFLICT WITH OTHER ACFT DURING THIS MANEUVER AND NONE WAS RPTED TO US BY ATC. HUMAN FACTORS: I INTEND TO PLACE PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON ALT AWARENESS VERSUS LOC AND GS POS IN MY FUTURE APCH BRIEFINGS.
