Narrative:
First officer flying the aircraft. Descent was initiated in time to make a steep, but stabilized approach. He intended to level off at FAF altitude. He unintentionally continued the descent to approximately 1000 ft afl, with the thrust levers at idle. I pointed out the lower than desired altitude and thrust combination. A terrain GPWS warning followed. He corrected back to glide path and completed the approach and landing. Debriefed after flight, emphasizing techniques for flying visual approachs, the GPWS, and stabilized approach.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CL65 CREW HAD A HIGH DSCNT RATE, UNSTABILIZED APCH THAT RESULTED IN A GPWS WARNING. THE CREW DID NOT RESPOND TO THE GPWS WARNING.
Narrative: FO FLYING THE ACFT. DSCNT WAS INITIATED IN TIME TO MAKE A STEEP, BUT STABILIZED APCH. HE INTENDED TO LEVEL OFF AT FAF ALT. HE UNINTENTIONALLY CONTINUED THE DSCNT TO APPROX 1000 FT AFL, WITH THE THRUST LEVERS AT IDLE. I POINTED OUT THE LOWER THAN DESIRED ALT AND THRUST COMBINATION. A TERRAIN GPWS WARNING FOLLOWED. HE CORRECTED BACK TO GLIDE PATH AND COMPLETED THE APCH AND LNDG. DEBRIEFED AFTER FLT, EMPHASIZING TECHNIQUES FOR FLYING VISUAL APCHS, THE GPWS, AND STABILIZED APCH.
