Narrative:
Passing 1500 ft AGL on departure, I requested a left turn for a VFR climb to on-course. The controller cleared us for a VFR climb to intercept V1W. I then stated that we wanted a left turn towards vokan to intercept UJ8 on course. The controller said 'approved as requested.' we turned left to a heading of 350 degrees and set up for an intercept on UJ8 to LMM. At about 50 NM the controller asked us to say our radial off of sjd. I reported that we were on the 003 degree radial. The controller then said that we were only cleared to intercept V1W, but that he would mark the tapes for review. We were then cleared to mazatlan center. Supplemental information from acn 544564: as we were about to intercept UJ8 about 50 mi north of sjd, departure had not switched us to center, so we queried her about the frequency change to mazatlan center. She asked our radial from sjd and then questioned why we had not intercepted V1W to lap. We responded that she had cleared us 'as requested.' departure questioned a course deviation. Since we were flying the clearance we were given, we believe no course deviation occurred.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC REQUESTS AND IS GIVEN APPROVAL FOR VFR CLB. LANGUAGE BARRIER BTWN PLTS AND CTLR CAUSE MISUNDERSTANDING.
Narrative: PASSING 1500 FT AGL ON DEP, I REQUESTED A L TURN FOR A VFR CLB TO ON-COURSE. THE CTLR CLRED US FOR A VFR CLB TO INTERCEPT V1W. I THEN STATED THAT WE WANTED A L TURN TOWARDS VOKAN TO INTERCEPT UJ8 ON COURSE. THE CTLR SAID 'APPROVED AS REQUESTED.' WE TURNED L TO A HDG OF 350 DEGS AND SET UP FOR AN INTERCEPT ON UJ8 TO LMM. AT ABOUT 50 NM THE CTLR ASKED US TO SAY OUR RADIAL OFF OF SJD. I RPTED THAT WE WERE ON THE 003 DEG RADIAL. THE CTLR THEN SAID THAT WE WERE ONLY CLRED TO INTERCEPT V1W, BUT THAT HE WOULD MARK THE TAPES FOR REVIEW. WE WERE THEN CLRED TO MAZATLAN CTR. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 544564: AS WE WERE ABOUT TO INTERCEPT UJ8 ABOUT 50 MI N OF SJD, DEP HAD NOT SWITCHED US TO CTR, SO WE QUERIED HER ABOUT THE FREQ CHANGE TO MAZATLAN CTR. SHE ASKED OUR RADIAL FROM SJD AND THEN QUESTIONED WHY WE HAD NOT INTERCEPTED V1W TO LAP. WE RESPONDED THAT SHE HAD CLRED US 'AS REQUESTED.' DEP QUESTIONED A COURSE DEV. SINCE WE WERE FLYING THE CLRNC WE WERE GIVEN, WE BELIEVE NO COURSE DEV OCCURRED.
