Narrative:
Crew copied taxi instructions 'taxi to runway 18L via taxiway hy, taxiway Y, give way to air carrier Y.' we followed air carrier Y on taxiway Y as we had copied. Ground then informed us we were actually on taxiway Y, to which I replied 'that's what we copied were our instructions.' ground then said we were supposed to be on taxiway Z, that our instructions were taxiway hy, taxiway Z to runway 18L. We did not copy any part about taxiway Z. Even if we had, it wouldn't have made sense because taxiway Y was the second taxiway which was where aircraft Y was that we had to give way to. If we went on taxiway Z, there would have been no reason to give way to air carrier Y. Either way, the taxiway names on the northwest corner of dfw are very confusing. Taxiway Y and taxiway hy touch each other, so you can't tell by verbal instructions if they're talking about taxiway H, taxiway Y, or taxiway hy. They need to change the names so the similar txwys are not in the same area.

Title: AN A320 CREW, TAXIING FOR TKOF AT DFW, TOOK A RTE TO THE RWY CONTRARY TO THAT ALLEGEDLY ASSIGNED BY ATC.
Narrative: CREW COPIED TAXI INSTRUCTIONS 'TAXI TO RWY 18L VIA TXWY HY, TXWY Y, GIVE WAY TO ACR Y.' WE FOLLOWED ACR Y ON TXWY Y AS WE HAD COPIED. GND THEN INFORMED US WE WERE ACTUALLY ON TXWY Y, TO WHICH I REPLIED 'THAT'S WHAT WE COPIED WERE OUR INSTRUCTIONS.' GND THEN SAID WE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE ON TXWY Z, THAT OUR INSTRUCTIONS WERE TXWY HY, TXWY Z TO RWY 18L. WE DID NOT COPY ANY PART ABOUT TXWY Z. EVEN IF WE HAD, IT WOULDN'T HAVE MADE SENSE BECAUSE TXWY Y WAS THE SECOND TXWY WHICH WAS WHERE ACFT Y WAS THAT WE HAD TO GIVE WAY TO. IF WE WENT ON TXWY Z, THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN NO REASON TO GIVE WAY TO ACR Y. EITHER WAY, THE TXWY NAMES ON THE NW CORNER OF DFW ARE VERY CONFUSING. TXWY Y AND TXWY HY TOUCH EACH OTHER, SO YOU CAN'T TELL BY VERBAL INSTRUCTIONS IF THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT TXWY H, TXWY Y, OR TXWY HY. THEY NEED TO CHANGE THE NAMES SO THE SIMILAR TXWYS ARE NOT IN THE SAME AREA.
