Narrative:
I was cleared for ILS runway 10R. Told to notify tower if I wanted circle to land runway 28L or land runway 10R. When I broke out at 1400 ft, I told tower request circle-to-land runway 28L. I was cleared to circle r-hand traffic and land runway 28R (according to tower -- later). Then I was warned of gulfstream taking off runway 28L for wake turbulence. I acknowledged and landed runway 28L. Then I was told on my rollout that I landed on runway 28L instead of runway 28R. I apologized on rollout and later on phone, but afterwards realized that I was still IFR until touchdown and should have been asked if I could accept runway 28R (non IFR runway) which I, of course, would accept and the question would have awakened me to runway 28R from my circle to land (IFR procedure) behind the gulfstream taking off. Also, it would have been equally nice to be told to contact a telephone number by ground control instead of the tower scolding me on rollout. I was, of course, wrong in thinking I was cleared to land runway 28L (the IFR runway) because the tower is in charge. However, I believe it would enhance safety if the tower would say 'can you accept runway 28R?' when I'm on an instrument approach and circling to land. They ask me this when I'm approaching in the king air -- why not the bonanza? Also, it would be nice if the scolding was done on the telephone.

Title: WRONG RWY LNDG, RWY INCURSION WHEN A BE36 ATP PLT LANDS ON RWY 28L VERSUS RWY 28R AT MRY, CA.
Narrative: I WAS CLRED FOR ILS RWY 10R. TOLD TO NOTIFY TWR IF I WANTED CIRCLE TO LAND RWY 28L OR LAND RWY 10R. WHEN I BROKE OUT AT 1400 FT, I TOLD TWR REQUEST CIRCLE-TO-LAND RWY 28L. I WAS CLRED TO CIRCLE R-HAND TFC AND LAND RWY 28R (ACCORDING TO TWR -- LATER). THEN I WAS WARNED OF GULFSTREAM TAKING OFF RWY 28L FOR WAKE TURB. I ACKNOWLEDGED AND LANDED RWY 28L. THEN I WAS TOLD ON MY ROLLOUT THAT I LANDED ON RWY 28L INSTEAD OF RWY 28R. I APOLOGIZED ON ROLLOUT AND LATER ON PHONE, BUT AFTERWARDS REALIZED THAT I WAS STILL IFR UNTIL TOUCHDOWN AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN ASKED IF I COULD ACCEPT RWY 28R (NON IFR RWY) WHICH I, OF COURSE, WOULD ACCEPT AND THE QUESTION WOULD HAVE AWAKENED ME TO RWY 28R FROM MY CIRCLE TO LAND (IFR PROC) BEHIND THE GULFSTREAM TAKING OFF. ALSO, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN EQUALLY NICE TO BE TOLD TO CONTACT A TELEPHONE NUMBER BY GND CTL INSTEAD OF THE TWR SCOLDING ME ON ROLLOUT. I WAS, OF COURSE, WRONG IN THINKING I WAS CLRED TO LAND RWY 28L (THE IFR RWY) BECAUSE THE TWR IS IN CHARGE. HOWEVER, I BELIEVE IT WOULD ENHANCE SAFETY IF THE TWR WOULD SAY 'CAN YOU ACCEPT RWY 28R?' WHEN I'M ON AN INST APCH AND CIRCLING TO LAND. THEY ASK ME THIS WHEN I'M APCHING IN THE KING AIR -- WHY NOT THE BONANZA? ALSO, IT WOULD BE NICE IF THE SCOLDING WAS DONE ON THE TELEPHONE.
