Narrative:

On climb out from cvg, destination atl, initially given the jodub departure to hvq, then vectored off on a 090 degree heading immediately after takeoff and kept on that heading for 25 NM east of cvg. Thunderstorms were in all quadrants on our route of flight. We were able to stay below the WX until our climb to FL230. Passing 13000 ft MSL, encountered heavy rain, moderate turbulence, what we thought was hail, and a flash off the nose of the aircraft. Reported the severe WX to ZID on 126.65. Asked ZID for a vector out of WX because it was very difficult to tell on the radar the best direction to turn to get out of the WX. On a 130 degree heading, we went about 15 NM and were able to get a better ride. We reported hail and lightning, however, when we arrived in atl there was no evidence after inspecting the aircraft that we had actually flown into hail or taken a lightning strike. Hope routing out of cvg will be better for us next time.

Title: B727 FLC REQUESTED VECTOR OUT OF SEVERE TSTM WX DURING DEP CLB FROM CVG DUE TO TURB, HAIL AND LIGHTNING STRIKE.

Narrative: ON CLBOUT FROM CVG, DEST ATL, INITIALLY GIVEN THE JODUB DEP TO HVQ, THEN VECTORED OFF ON A 090 DEG HDG IMMEDIATELY AFTER TKOF AND KEPT ON THAT HDG FOR 25 NM E OF CVG. TSTMS WERE IN ALL QUADRANTS ON OUR RTE OF FLT. WE WERE ABLE TO STAY BELOW THE WX UNTIL OUR CLB TO FL230. PASSING 13000 FT MSL, ENCOUNTERED HVY RAIN, MODERATE TURB, WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS HAIL, AND A FLASH OFF THE NOSE OF THE ACFT. RPTED THE SEVERE WX TO ZID ON 126.65. ASKED ZID FOR A VECTOR OUT OF WX BECAUSE IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO TELL ON THE RADAR THE BEST DIRECTION TO TURN TO GET OUT OF THE WX. ON A 130 DEG HDG, WE WENT ABOUT 15 NM AND WERE ABLE TO GET A BETTER RIDE. WE RPTED HAIL AND LIGHTNING, HOWEVER, WHEN WE ARRIVED IN ATL THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE AFTER INSPECTING THE ACFT THAT WE HAD ACTUALLY FLOWN INTO HAIL OR TAKEN A LIGHTNING STRIKE. HOPE ROUTING OUT OF CVG WILL BE BETTER FOR US NEXT TIME.
