Narrative:
While taxiing out for runway 22R, inadvertently made a wrong turn on taxiway K and stopped prior to encroachment of runway 27R with the instruction from ground ATC to stop. Continued to taxi without incident for departure thereafter. Ground ATC was queried about the incident and said no problem. The situation for taxi was unusual in that both runways 22 and 27 were being utilized -- runway 22 for departure, and runway 27 for arrs. The taxi instructions to runway 22 have almost become routine in crossing runway 27 as runway 27 is rarely used. (Although runway 27 arrival was, in this case, noted on the departure ATIS.) the taxi routing should have been briefed prior to aircraft movement with a heightened vigilance by the flight crew. As far as airport signage, wig-wag lights at this intersection would have received anyone's attention prior to an incursion. There are no such lights at that intersection.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DC9 FLC ARE STOPPED BEFORE XING AN ACTIVE RWY DURING TAXI OUT AT DTW BY TWR CTLR AFTER MAKING A WRONG TURN ON THEIR ORIGINAL CLRNC RTE.
Narrative: WHILE TAXIING OUT FOR RWY 22R, INADVERTENTLY MADE A WRONG TURN ON TXWY K AND STOPPED PRIOR TO ENCROACHMENT OF RWY 27R WITH THE INSTRUCTION FROM GND ATC TO STOP. CONTINUED TO TAXI WITHOUT INCIDENT FOR DEP THEREAFTER. GND ATC WAS QUERIED ABOUT THE INCIDENT AND SAID NO PROB. THE SIT FOR TAXI WAS UNUSUAL IN THAT BOTH RWYS 22 AND 27 WERE BEING UTILIZED -- RWY 22 FOR DEP, AND RWY 27 FOR ARRS. THE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS TO RWY 22 HAVE ALMOST BECOME ROUTINE IN XING RWY 27 AS RWY 27 IS RARELY USED. (ALTHOUGH RWY 27 ARR WAS, IN THIS CASE, NOTED ON THE DEP ATIS.) THE TAXI ROUTING SHOULD HAVE BEEN BRIEFED PRIOR TO ACFT MOVEMENT WITH A HEIGHTENED VIGILANCE BY THE FLC. AS FAR AS ARPT SIGNAGE, WIG-WAG LIGHTS AT THIS INTXN WOULD HAVE RECEIVED ANYONE'S ATTN PRIOR TO AN INCURSION. THERE ARE NO SUCH LIGHTS AT THAT INTXN.
