Narrative:
Taxiing out of the ramp area in newark, we were cleared to taxi on the ramp frequency. The ramp near this area usually controls txwys a&B. We were about 100 yards from the area where ramp controls txwys a&B. We thought we were within that area. We called ground control as we approached taxiway a, but ground control did not call us back until the nose of the aircraft crossed a portion of taxiway a. Ground control called us and gave us a taxi clearance to the active runway 22L at taxiway west. The controller told us this happens frequently. There was not any other aircraft near us or on taxiway a when the occurrence happened. Lessons learned would be: better CRM with the first officer. Markings on the ramp should be more clear. The 10-7 page on the airport plate should be more clear as to who controls that area of the ramp and txwys.

Title: AN E135 CREW, TAXIING FOR TKOF AT EWR, WERE CONFUSED AS TO WHERE RAMP CTL ENDED AND GND CTL BEGAN.
Narrative: TAXIING OUT OF THE RAMP AREA IN NEWARK, WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI ON THE RAMP FREQ. THE RAMP NEAR THIS AREA USUALLY CTLS TXWYS A&B. WE WERE ABOUT 100 YARDS FROM THE AREA WHERE RAMP CTLS TXWYS A&B. WE THOUGHT WE WERE WITHIN THAT AREA. WE CALLED GND CTL AS WE APCHED TXWY A, BUT GND CTL DID NOT CALL US BACK UNTIL THE NOSE OF THE ACFT CROSSED A PORTION OF TXWY A. GND CTL CALLED US AND GAVE US A TAXI CLRNC TO THE ACTIVE RWY 22L AT TXWY W. THE CTLR TOLD US THIS HAPPENS FREQUENTLY. THERE WAS NOT ANY OTHER ACFT NEAR US OR ON TXWY A WHEN THE OCCURRENCE HAPPENED. LESSONS LEARNED WOULD BE: BETTER CRM WITH THE FO. MARKINGS ON THE RAMP SHOULD BE MORE CLR. THE 10-7 PAGE ON THE ARPT PLATE SHOULD BE MORE CLR AS TO WHO CTLS THAT AREA OF THE RAMP AND TXWYS.
