Narrative:
20 to 22 miles out of rno on the localizer back course to runway 34L dsndg from 11000 ft to 9600 ft, we had a near miss with a white glider. We passed the glider by about 200 ft. We had not seen the glider prior to this nor had any traffic been reported by ATC. Our paths were diverging when we made visual contact. Callback conversation with report revealed the following information: a conversation with the reporter added little to the original report, other than krno approach was contacted and notified of the incident. Supplemental information: a local FSDO inspector revealed that the sierra nevada mountain range provides some of the world's best conditions for glider flying. Many local airports offer glider instruction, while catering to those world wide enthusiast who want to take advantage of the local soaring conditions. The inspector, although defending the integrity and professionalism of the glider pilots and their training, showed concern over the possible conflict this glider activity may have with commercial aviation in the area. Krno TRACON/tower controllers along with the FAA are aware of, and are trying to remedy, the situation.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B733 CREW, ON APCH TO KRNO, HAD A NMAC WITH A GLIDER AT APPROX 10000 FT.
Narrative: 20 TO 22 MILES OUT OF RNO ON THE LOC BC TO RWY 34L DSNDG FROM 11000 FT TO 9600 FT, WE HAD A NEAR MISS WITH A WHITE GLIDER. WE PASSED THE GLIDER BY ABOUT 200 FT. WE HAD NOT SEEN THE GLIDER PRIOR TO THIS NOR HAD ANY TFC BEEN RPTED BY ATC. OUR PATHS WERE DIVERGING WHEN WE MADE VISUAL CONTACT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPT REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: A CONVERSATION WITH THE RPTR ADDED LITTLE TO THE ORIGINAL RPT, OTHER THAN KRNO APCH WAS CONTACTED AND NOTIFIED OF THE INCIDENT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO: A LOCAL FSDO INSPECTOR REVEALED THAT THE SIERRA NEVADA MOUNTAIN RANGE PROVIDES SOME OF THE WORLD'S BEST CONDITIONS FOR GLIDER FLYING. MANY LOCAL ARPTS OFFER GLIDER INSTRUCTION, WHILE CATERING TO THOSE WORLD WIDE ENTHUSIAST WHO WANT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE LOCAL SOARING CONDITIONS. THE INSPECTOR, ALTHOUGH DEFENDING THE INTEGRITY AND PROFESSIONALISM OF THE GLIDER PLTS AND THEIR TRAINING, SHOWED CONCERN OVER THE POSSIBLE CONFLICT THIS GLIDER ACTIVITY MAY HAVE WITH COMMERCIAL AVIATION IN THE AREA. KRNO TRACON/TWR CTLRS ALONG WITH THE FAA ARE AWARE OF, AND ARE TRYING TO REMEDY, THE SIT.
