Narrative:
IFR flight from lit to arlington, tx. Upon descent, ATC 'suggested' we cancel IFR to facilitate handling into arlington. We canceled IFR and ended up landing at grand prairie airport which is approximately 3 mi from arlington. Runways are same orientation and airports look almost the same. Tower controller at gpm indicated to us, 'this happens all the time, don't worry about it.' even with GPS, we made this mistake. A notation on the approach plates might be helpful. Supplemental information from acn 549959: it was VFR and approach brought us in over dallas love. We stayed with approach until canceling and proceeding visually. There were several aircraft in the vicinity and it was late afternoon/early evening. We were both concerned about traffic and our position reporting. As a result, we landed at gpm, a field just 3 mi from gky. We were approximately 15 mi from gky when we canceled with dallas approach. As a crew, we both were searching for traffic both visually and on TCASII. Factors which attributed: 1) hazy. 2) runway orientation. 3) unfamiliarity with the area.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN FA10 CREW, ON APCH TO GKY, LANDED AT ANOTHER ARPT WITH SIMILAR RWY ORIENTATION.
Narrative: IFR FLT FROM LIT TO ARLINGTON, TX. UPON DSCNT, ATC 'SUGGESTED' WE CANCEL IFR TO FACILITATE HANDLING INTO ARLINGTON. WE CANCELED IFR AND ENDED UP LNDG AT GRAND PRAIRIE ARPT WHICH IS APPROX 3 MI FROM ARLINGTON. RWYS ARE SAME ORIENTATION AND ARPTS LOOK ALMOST THE SAME. TWR CTLR AT GPM INDICATED TO US, 'THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME, DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT.' EVEN WITH GPS, WE MADE THIS MISTAKE. A NOTATION ON THE APCH PLATES MIGHT BE HELPFUL. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 549959: IT WAS VFR AND APCH BROUGHT US IN OVER DALLAS LOVE. WE STAYED WITH APCH UNTIL CANCELING AND PROCEEDING VISUALLY. THERE WERE SEVERAL ACFT IN THE VICINITY AND IT WAS LATE AFTERNOON/EARLY EVENING. WE WERE BOTH CONCERNED ABOUT TFC AND OUR POS RPTING. AS A RESULT, WE LANDED AT GPM, A FIELD JUST 3 MI FROM GKY. WE WERE APPROX 15 MI FROM GKY WHEN WE CANCELED WITH DALLAS APCH. AS A CREW, WE BOTH WERE SEARCHING FOR TFC BOTH VISUALLY AND ON TCASII. FACTORS WHICH ATTRIBUTED: 1) HAZY. 2) RWY ORIENTATION. 3) UNFAMILIARITY WITH THE AREA.
