Narrative:

Coincident with retracting the flaps during climb, a noticeable 'thump' was heard/felt that was uncharacteristic of this phase of flight. The tail of the jet also seemed to swish back and forth slightly 1 cycle. We had no abnormal flight control indications in the cockpit for the flaps/led's or rudder, but we called our maintenance desk in atl. They, along with dispatch, asked us to return to cvg since no maintenance was available at rdu -- destination. We did not declare an emergency, but advised ATC that we needed to return to cvg for maintenance. We were not certain if we actually had a problem, and if so, if it was flight control related. The aircraft handled normally for the rest of flight. Return land was uneventful.

Title: RETURN LAND MANDATED FOR A B727 FLC WHEN THE ACFT IS BELIEVED TO HAVE SUFFERED A FLAP PROB THAT CREATED AN UNUSUAL NOISE AND SWERVE DURING FLAP RETRACTION AFTER DEP FROM CVG, KY.

Narrative: COINCIDENT WITH RETRACTING THE FLAPS DURING CLB, A NOTICEABLE 'THUMP' WAS HEARD/FELT THAT WAS UNCHARACTERISTIC OF THIS PHASE OF FLT. THE TAIL OF THE JET ALSO SEEMED TO SWISH BACK AND FORTH SLIGHTLY 1 CYCLE. WE HAD NO ABNORMAL FLT CTL INDICATIONS IN THE COCKPIT FOR THE FLAPS/LED'S OR RUDDER, BUT WE CALLED OUR MAINT DESK IN ATL. THEY, ALONG WITH DISPATCH, ASKED US TO RETURN TO CVG SINCE NO MAINT WAS AVAILABLE AT RDU -- DEST. WE DID NOT DECLARE AN EMER, BUT ADVISED ATC THAT WE NEEDED TO RETURN TO CVG FOR MAINT. WE WERE NOT CERTAIN IF WE ACTUALLY HAD A PROB, AND IF SO, IF IT WAS FLT CTL RELATED. THE ACFT HANDLED NORMALLY FOR THE REST OF FLT. RETURN LAND WAS UNEVENTFUL.
