Narrative:
We were cleared to taxi to runway 30 and given our departure clearance. We were told to hold short of runway 30 which we did. Tower then told us 'taxi into position and hold runway 30, can you take a VFR climb?' we said 'yes.' tower said 'you are cleared to climb to FL210, contact ZLC on frequency 132.4 passing through 15000 ft. First officer was flying and I read back clearance and assumed I was cleared for takeoff, which we did. On climb out, tower told us we were supposed to hold in position.

Narrative: WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 30 AND GIVEN OUR DEP CLRNC. WE WERE TOLD TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 30 WHICH WE DID. TWR THEN TOLD US 'TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD RWY 30, CAN YOU TAKE A VFR CLB?'
