Narrative:
After takeoff at approximately 1200 ft, after throttles were retarded to climb power, pilots observed a loud bang emanating from rear of aircraft, followed by a noticeable yaw to left. Master caution 'left engine surge' illuminated as well as visible and acrid smoke flowing from the air conditioning system. Captain ordered first officer to declare emergency and intent to return to airport. Aircraft leveled off at 2200 ft. Left engine produced thrust at idle and low engine power settings. Received vectors for visual approach and backed up with ILS final. Requested arff. Captain directed first officer to call flight attendants on interphone on approach and advise it would be a normal landing with no evacuate/evacuation required. Completed 'diamond checklist' for emergency return to field. Captain delayed flaps 40 degrees until landing assured. Called tower/arff for external fire/damage check on clearing runway. Debriefed flight attendants at hotel.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B712 CREW, DURING INITIAL CLB FROM LIH, EXPERIENCED AN ENG FAILURE, RETURNING TO DEP ARPT.
Narrative: AFTER TKOF AT APPROX 1200 FT, AFTER THROTTLES WERE RETARDED TO CLB PWR, PLTS OBSERVED A LOUD BANG EMANATING FROM REAR OF ACFT, FOLLOWED BY A NOTICEABLE YAW TO L. MASTER CAUTION 'L ENG SURGE' ILLUMINATED AS WELL AS VISIBLE AND ACRID SMOKE FLOWING FROM THE AIR CONDITIONING SYS. CAPT ORDERED FO TO DECLARE EMER AND INTENT TO RETURN TO ARPT. ACFT LEVELED OFF AT 2200 FT. L ENG PRODUCED THRUST AT IDLE AND LOW ENG PWR SETTINGS. RECEIVED VECTORS FOR VISUAL APCH AND BACKED UP WITH ILS FINAL. REQUESTED ARFF. CAPT DIRECTED FO TO CALL FLT ATTENDANTS ON INTERPHONE ON APCH AND ADVISE IT WOULD BE A NORMAL LNDG WITH NO EVAC REQUIRED. COMPLETED 'DIAMOND CHKLIST' FOR EMER RETURN TO FIELD. CAPT DELAYED FLAPS 40 DEGS UNTIL LNDG ASSURED. CALLED TWR/ARFF FOR EXTERNAL FIRE/DAMAGE CHK ON CLRING RWY. DEBRIEFED FLT ATTENDANTS AT HOTEL.
