Narrative:
While taxiing for takeoff on runway 14R, tower instructed us to 'hold short of runway 14R.' we acknowledged 'company number, hold short runway 14R.' as an air carrier B737 was crossing our nose, landing on runway 14R, we heard 'company number, taxi onto position and hold runway 14R.' we acknowledged 'company number, on to position and hold runway 14R.' we finished the pre takeoff checklist, checked final and noticed a jet at about 4 to 5 mi. This seems about the right spacing for us to be able to take off after air carrier Y clears the runway. As we get the front 1/3 - 1/2 of the jet over the hold short line, we heard 'company number, hold short of runway 14R.' we acknowledged 'company number, hold short runway 14R.' tower then said 'company number, are you past the hold short line?' we said 'affirmative.' they sent the rj around then cleared us for takeoff. On center frequency, we got a phone number to call tower. The captain called from destination and discussed the situation with oma tower. Apparently, tower did hear us read back the 'on to hold' instructions, but did not respond to correct it. To avoid/correct the situation in the future, I need to listen closer to specific call signs and analyze whether the instructions make sense for us. When any doubt exists -- ask! One illusion that may have contributed was the rj looking farther out on final due to its smaller size.

Title: A B737-300 CREW, AFTER BEING CLRED INTO POS AT OMA, WERE XING THE HOLD LINE, WHEN TWR ISSUED A HOLD SHORT CLRNC, SPAWNING A TWR ISSUED GAR TO LNDG TFC.
Narrative: WHILE TAXIING FOR TKOF ON RWY 14R, TWR INSTRUCTED US TO 'HOLD SHORT OF RWY 14R.' WE ACKNOWLEDGED 'COMPANY NUMBER, HOLD SHORT RWY 14R.' AS AN ACR B737 WAS XING OUR NOSE, LNDG ON RWY 14R, WE HEARD 'COMPANY NUMBER, TAXI ONTO POS AND HOLD RWY 14R.' WE ACKNOWLEDGED 'COMPANY NUMBER, ON TO POS AND HOLD RWY 14R.' WE FINISHED THE PRE TKOF CHKLIST, CHKED FINAL AND NOTICED A JET AT ABOUT 4 TO 5 MI. THIS SEEMS ABOUT THE RIGHT SPACING FOR US TO BE ABLE TO TAKE OFF AFTER ACR Y CLRS THE RWY. AS WE GET THE FRONT 1/3 - 1/2 OF THE JET OVER THE HOLD SHORT LINE, WE HEARD 'COMPANY NUMBER, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 14R.' WE ACKNOWLEDGED 'COMPANY NUMBER, HOLD SHORT RWY 14R.' TWR THEN SAID 'COMPANY NUMBER, ARE YOU PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE?' WE SAID 'AFFIRMATIVE.' THEY SENT THE RJ AROUND THEN CLRED US FOR TKOF. ON CTR FREQ, WE GOT A PHONE NUMBER TO CALL TWR. THE CAPT CALLED FROM DEST AND DISCUSSED THE SIT WITH OMA TWR. APPARENTLY, TWR DID HEAR US READ BACK THE 'ON TO HOLD' INSTRUCTIONS, BUT DID NOT RESPOND TO CORRECT IT. TO AVOID/CORRECT THE SIT IN THE FUTURE, I NEED TO LISTEN CLOSER TO SPECIFIC CALL SIGNS AND ANALYZE WHETHER THE INSTRUCTIONS MAKE SENSE FOR US. WHEN ANY DOUBT EXISTS -- ASK! ONE ILLUSION THAT MAY HAVE CONTRIBUTED WAS THE RJ LOOKING FARTHER OUT ON FINAL DUE TO ITS SMALLER SIZE.
