Narrative:

While level at 14000 ft and deviating around buildups, I requested from ZJX direct destination and 'one-six-zero.' ZJX responded 'cleared as requested.' I changed heading and commenced a climb to 16000 ft. At 14700 ft, ZJX inquired as to why I was climbing. I repeated what I thought I had been cleared for and was told to continue climb. I asked jax if there was a problem and they replied 'no sir.' in retrospect, I should have requested 'aircraft X requesting direct destination and 16000 ft.'

Title: ARTCC'S RESPONSE TO A C421 PLT'S REQUEST WAS, 'CLRED AS REQUESTED,' WITHOUT REPEATING CLRNC, WHICH LEFT SOME CONFUSION AS TO REQUESTED ALT.

Narrative: WHILE LEVEL AT 14000 FT AND DEVIATING AROUND BUILDUPS, I REQUESTED FROM ZJX DIRECT DEST AND 'ONE-SIX-ZERO.' ZJX RESPONDED 'CLRED AS REQUESTED.' I CHANGED HDG AND COMMENCED A CLB TO 16000 FT. AT 14700 FT, ZJX INQUIRED AS TO WHY I WAS CLBING. I REPEATED WHAT I THOUGHT I HAD BEEN CLRED FOR AND WAS TOLD TO CONTINUE CLB. I ASKED JAX IF THERE WAS A PROB AND THEY REPLIED 'NO SIR.' IN RETROSPECT, I SHOULD HAVE REQUESTED 'ACFT X REQUESTING DIRECT DEST AND 16000 FT.'
