Narrative:
We were cleared for a visual approach to runway 34R by approach control. Controller called learjet traffic to us that was high on a left base for runway 35. We called the traffic in sight. Lear rolled out on extended centerline of our runway above us and started slowing and descending on top of us. We were switched to tower frequency, when I said to tower 'this doesn't look like it will work out.' the controller did not take any action to correct the situation so I started to break off the approach to the left. I asked for runway 34L landing clearance but they couldn't do it. They asked if we could turn back in for runway 34R but I wasn't comfortable with that since I now could not see the learjet. I didn't see any traffic on final for runway 34L except for short final. We continued on a downwind for runway 34L and visually landed. Supplemental information from acn 556787: we executed go around and entered downwind for runway 34L and landed on runway 34L.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A POTENTIAL CONFLICT WITH A B767-400 INFLICTED BY A LEARJET WHEN THE LEAR LINES UP WITH RWY 34R INSTEAD OF THE CLRED TO RWY OF RWY 35 AT SLC, UT.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 34R BY APCH CTL. CTLR CALLED LEARJET TFC TO US THAT WAS HIGH ON A L BASE FOR RWY 35. WE CALLED THE TFC IN SIGHT. LEAR ROLLED OUT ON EXTENDED CTRLINE OF OUR RWY ABOVE US AND STARTED SLOWING AND DSNDING ON TOP OF US. WE WERE SWITCHED TO TWR FREQ, WHEN I SAID TO TWR 'THIS DOESN'T LOOK LIKE IT WILL WORK OUT.' THE CTLR DID NOT TAKE ANY ACTION TO CORRECT THE SIT SO I STARTED TO BREAK OFF THE APCH TO THE L. I ASKED FOR RWY 34L LNDG CLRNC BUT THEY COULDN'T DO IT. THEY ASKED IF WE COULD TURN BACK IN FOR RWY 34R BUT I WASN'T COMFORTABLE WITH THAT SINCE I NOW COULD NOT SEE THE LEARJET. I DIDN'T SEE ANY TFC ON FINAL FOR RWY 34L EXCEPT FOR SHORT FINAL. WE CONTINUED ON A DOWNWIND FOR RWY 34L AND VISUALLY LANDED. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 556787: WE EXECUTED GAR AND ENTERED DOWNWIND FOR RWY 34L AND LANDED ON RWY 34L.
