Narrative:
Passenger suspected of smoking in the lavatory. I was informed by the flight attendant that a passenger had reported someone was smoking in the left aft lavatory. Flight attendant #2 then knocked repeatedly on the lavatory door and got no response. She unlocked and opened the door from the outside and the passenger appeared to be washing ashes down the wash basin. He and the lavatory smelled of smoke. Flight attendant #2 warned passenger who then was notified of the far's concerning smoking. He was cooperative and stated that he would comply. Passenger provided personal identify. Cigarette butt was later found in the lavatory trash. The no smoking sign was illuminated during the smoking incident.
