Narrative:
We were cleared off danbury to the carmel VORTAC, then J39 mooni...etc. This gave us an acute turn, almost reversing course. The universal UNS1K was activated with the autoplt on. Because of the acute angle turn, the FMS began turning well before the cmk (carmel) VORTAC. ATC advised we were off course and gave us an immediate right turn. To avoid this, the FMS must be programmed with cmk as a flyover waypoint, not flyby.
