Narrative:
I was PF. We were going direct civet for the civet 4 arrival. Just before civet, we were reclred mitts 1 for runway 24R. We entered runway 24R ILS and mitts 1 in the FMC. Mitts 1 begins at mitts, so we had a discontinuity between civet and mitts. We had to find the paper arrival chart to determine that we needed the civet transition to the mitts 1. By now we were beyond civet. The transition was entered and the flight director called for a right turn back to civet. I started that turn, realized it was not right, and turned back towards mitts. If socal had cleared us mitts 1 civet transition, there would have been no problem. Supplemental information from acn 558996: captain went to heading select and turned to intercept. Approach then cleared us direct mitts and we continued arrival. It would help if approach would issue this clearance at least 2 or 3 mins before we arrive over the fix.

Title: A LAST MIN CHANGE TO A DIFFERENT STAR IN THE LAX ARR AREA CAUSES COCKPIT MGMNT DIFFICULTIES AND A MINOR TRACK DEV FOR A B777 CREW.
Narrative: I WAS PF. WE WERE GOING DIRECT CIVET FOR THE CIVET 4 ARR. JUST BEFORE CIVET, WE WERE RECLRED MITTS 1 FOR RWY 24R. WE ENTERED RWY 24R ILS AND MITTS 1 IN THE FMC. MITTS 1 BEGINS AT MITTS, SO WE HAD A DISCONTINUITY BTWN CIVET AND MITTS. WE HAD TO FIND THE PAPER ARR CHART TO DETERMINE THAT WE NEEDED THE CIVET TRANSITION TO THE MITTS 1. BY NOW WE WERE BEYOND CIVET. THE TRANSITION WAS ENTERED AND THE FLT DIRECTOR CALLED FOR A R TURN BACK TO CIVET. I STARTED THAT TURN, REALIZED IT WAS NOT RIGHT, AND TURNED BACK TOWARDS MITTS. IF SOCAL HAD CLRED US MITTS 1 CIVET TRANSITION, THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN NO PROB. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 558996: CAPT WENT TO HDG SELECT AND TURNED TO INTERCEPT. APCH THEN CLRED US DIRECT MITTS AND WE CONTINUED ARR. IT WOULD HELP IF APCH WOULD ISSUE THIS CLRNC AT LEAST 2 OR 3 MINS BEFORE WE ARRIVE OVER THE FIX.
